Defiance College has an immediate opening for an energetic and creative music professional to serve as the Assistant Director of Music Programs. Defiance College Music Programs serve students through a variety of vocal and instrumental ensembles and offers private lessons in voice, band and orchestral instruments, guitar, bass, and percussion.

Reporting to the Director of Music Programs through Student Affairs, the individual will have direct responsibility for conducting, leading, and delivering instrumental music performance experiences for students, including the Defiance College marching band, pep band, and other ensembles. The Assistant Director will be heavily involved in new student recruitment, will be responsible for building ensembles and will teach at least three-credit hours of content-based music courses per academic year. Other duties include the management sheet music inventory and assisting with the inventory control of instrumental music equipment.

The successful candidate for this a full-time, 10-month administrative appointment (August 1 to May 31) must have a Master’s degree with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a related field. The individual must be capable of leading, rehearsing, and conducting individuals and musical ensembles for public performances, be able to travel on occasion, and be able to adjust to a flexible work schedule, which will include some evenings and some weekends.

Assistant Director Of Bands: The University Of Arizona

The University of Arizona is seeking a dynamic musician and colleague to join our team as Assistant Director of Bands. The Fred Fox School of Music at the University of Arizona seeks to hire a career-track faculty member to be part of a dynamic, collaborative team of faculty and staff beginning in the 2021/2022 academic year. The Assistant Director of Bands will collaborate with the Director of Athletic Bands and the Director of Bands in all facets of instruction and planning of ensemble activities. The majority of responsibilities fall within the Athletic Bands, however, there will be opportunities in other areas of the band department in accordance with the strengths of the successful candidate.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Attend and assist in all aspects of UA Athletic Bands (marching band and pep band), including all performances and rehearsals, auditions, game day operations, show design, UA Band Day, student leadership, outreach, and development initiatives.
  • The Assistant Director of Bands will maintain rehearsal and performance schedules for all athletic band events, as well as maintain the inventory of all athletic band equipment and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in music or related field
  • Experience with marching bands (teaching, drill writing and arranging) with a preference toward teaching experience at the collegiate level
  • Experience with collegiate pep bands and evidence of strong interpersonal, organizational, administrative and communication skills.
  • 5 years’ instructional experience in collegiate and/or competitive high school marching bands Show development/design
  • Sound design/reinforcement/system experience
  • Video/audio editing experience
  • Microsoft Office Suite experience
  • Google Suite experience

US Naval Academy Band Jazz & Ceremonial Trumpet

The United States Naval Academy Band is seeking a trumpet player to perform with the Jazz Combo, Ceremonial/Marching Units, and Brass Quintet. While Jazz style and improvisation are the emphasis of this audition, a demonstration of proficiency in classical trumpet performance is a requirement. The first round is based on a live video recording due August 2, 2021. The accepted applicants will then participate in a live audition, which will be held on September 13, 2021. The audition committee reserves the right to dismiss any candidate not meeting the highest professional standards.
